Shuukan: Weekly.
Gekkan: Monthly.
Bessatsu: Extra Issue or Additional Volume.
Zoukan: Special Edition or Special Issue.

Manga magazine: Serialize several/many manga series. manga magazines have a magazine code and ISBN code.

Manga anthology: Serialize several/many manga series, but unlike manga magazines, manga anthologies only have ISBN code (they are not considered to be magazines), are published under a manga imprint/label like any other manga tankoubon (manga volume), and usually are not published on a regular basis (though not always).

Mook: A combination of the words Magazine and Book. A mook is usually a thin book with its layout and design similar to a magazine. Unlike magazines, a mook has an ISBN code.

Male oriented manga magazines:
- Shounen (boy's) manga magazines.
- Seinen (young men's) manga magazines.
- Seijin (adult men's) manga magazines.
- Bishoujo manga magazines.
- Bara (ML, Men's Love) manga magazines/anthologies.

Female oriented manga magazines:
- Shoujo (girl's) manga magazines.
- Josei (young women's) manga magazines.
- Redikomi (adult women's) manga magagzines.
- Yaoi/BL (Boys Love) manga magazines.

Groups:

Otowa group:
- Kodansha (publishing the Shonen Magazine line)
- Kobunsha

Hitotsubashi group:
- Shueisha (publishing Shonen Jump line of manga magazines)
- Shogakukan (publishing Shonen Sunday manga magazine)
- Hakusensha (publishing Young Animal manga magazine).
- King Records (now independent of Kodansha's record division, sometimes included in the Otowa group)

The names Otowa and Hitotsubashi probably refer to the fact that the main offices of the various companies are located in the Otowa and Hitotsubashi areas in Tokyo. The two groups have been rivals for a long time.
