Publishers "Hekitensha," "Biblos" and "Highland" File for Bankruptcy
- Translated by Neuroretardant

Hekitensha, a publishing company which dealt primarily with joint publications and self-financed works, had ceased operations around the middle of last month, and filed for bankruptcy on the 31st of March. This started off a chain reaction which resulted in two other publishers filing for bankruptcy protection effective April 5th in Tokyo District Court: Biblos, an affiliate company that handled Boy's Love publications and which Hiroaki Yamamoto, president of Hekitensha, was the CEO of, and Highland, a creditor company which also dealt with Boy's Love material. There is no word yet on what will happen to other affiliate companies of Hekitensha, such as the e-book publisher Bibloport.

Each company will hold a creditors' meeting on the 6th and 13th of April, respectively. At this time, whether or not publications, magazines, and editorial staff from each company will be passed on to other companies is not clear. We will keep you posted about any updates to the situation.

Addendum:

The bankruptcy filing of Biblos came as a shock to many, as it had been in the spotlight frequently last year, holding the first annual National Otaku Exams in July 2005, then debuting a new magazine titled "Otaku Elite," which featured Democratic Party of Japan representative Yukio Hatoyama (Wiki ) on the inaugural cover and included preview questions for the second Otaku Exams.

According to a company spokesman, the company had deficits in the range of 2 billion yen ($17 million US); also, apparently the publishing arm of the company was actually profitable, but due to other factors such as the struggling performances of affiliate companies, cash flows had been limited for some time.

Yamane Ayano, who has several series published under the label, talks about the bankruptcy. [ Translation of the Story ]

Anime News Network has contact several US publishers regarding the bankruptcy:

We contacted Tokyopop, Be Beautiful (Central Park Media), Kitty Media and Digital Manga Publishing regarding how the Biblos bankruptcy would affect their publishing.

Tokyopop informed us that it is currently too early for them to comment on the situation as they only received word of the bankruptcy earlier today.

Stephanie Shalovsky of Central Park Media stated, "We are sorry to hear the news, they were great people to work with. We're not certain what is going to happen with Biblos, but hopefully we're going to be able to work with them in the future. In the meantime there's no impact on our release schedule and what we're going to be doing." CPM publishes several Biblos titles, including Kizuna, under their Be Beautiful label.

Similarly, Frank Pannone, Managing Editor at Kitty Media stated, "Biblos was the leader in Yaoi romance and the licensor of our best-selling Yaoi properties, Level C and Skyscrapers of Oz. This will not effect the publishing of any titles that have been announced. The titles that we have already published will remain in print at least until the contracts expire. And then we will look into whatever options there are to renew." ...But, I'm Your Teacher and the sixth and final volume of Level C have already been printed and are due to be released this month, I Can't Stop Loving You is due out in July and October.

Rachel Livingston of Digital Manga Publishing informed us, "Titles already released we will continue reprinting. For ongoing titles like Our Kingdom (currently at volume 6 in Japan), we're not entirely sure of the status of those, but we're going to strive to pick them up regardless of who has them even if we have to deal with the original authors or other publishers."

MangaCast has posted some additional information on the Biblos Bankruptcy. Zakzak also reports that following the bankruptcy is a potential rush to grab former titles/personnel/editorial staff/etc.

According to Yomiuri Online, due to the recent bankruptcy of Hetensha, the publication of works from over 250 authors has been halted. Currently there is the possibility that the publishing fees (several hundred thousand yens) will not be returned to the authors, resulting in the authors feeling "cheated."

Libre Publishing has picked up the Be x Boy line after Biblos' bankruptcy.

Digima ceased operation after suspending its free manga magazine Comic Gumbo: "the first free weekly manga magazine in Japan. It reportedly sustained losses of 200 million yen (about US$2 million)." From ANN:

According to the Teikoku Databank market research firm, the manga startup company Digima ceased operations the same day it published the last issue of Comic Gumbo, the first free weekly manga magazine in Japan. It reportedly sustained losses of 200 million yen (about US$2 million). Digima had just been established as a company in August of 2006. It attempted to reach its target audience of 20- to 34-year-old students and businessmen by initially distributing 100,000 magazine copies every week, primarily near train and subway stations and at Internet and manga cafés in the Tokyo area. Its website is still active, although some features are reportedly disabled.

Heiwa Shuppan Declares Bankruptcy:

It's being reported widely in Japan that Heiwa Shuppan has gone bankrupt as of December 5th. The publisher is well known for it's adult manga and pachinko magazines. Supporting the notion, several hentai manga titles distributed online through LEED publishing's V.Wave have been discontinued on the same date. You can view a list of those titles at the link.

The company was established in December, 1965 and maintains a capital of 10 million Yen, headed by President Kenji Fujiwara. Staff includes: 24 employees at last count. Debt is about one billion Yen. Magazines published also include some car tuning rags such as "Drift Machine And Super Tuning". Comic related magazines included "T.A.T.u Art Catalog" and "Hanshin Yuushou Special".

A 2 billion 142 million Yen annual turnover was last announced for the fiscal period ending in September, 2004. It's said the company's debt load rose from the purchase of a five story corporate headquarters building in November,1995. Struggling also with establishing a hit property, the headquarters building was sold on November 7th this year along with the copyrights etc. of several magazines. Although the funds raised through those efforts was applied to fight the debt, inactive sales continued. Bankruptcy procedures are now underway and relations are being persued with related companies to continue business.

Penguin Shobo Declares Bankruptcy, Comic Seed To Cease Publication:

The following excerpt was posted on the blog of Kizuki Akira, author of the manga "Yoiko no Mirai!" currently running in Comic Seed, a free online monthly manga anthology published by Penguin Shobo:

Regarding the Bankruptcy of Penguin Shobo and My Future

I received permission to make a public announcement today: as some of you are undoubtedly aware, Penguin Shobo, the publisher for whom I write, has declared bankruptcy.

It came as a surprise to everyone: I myself only found out about it last weekend.

As a result, Comic Seed will cease publication after this month's issue. Staff are still working hard without pay, but there are currently no prospects of the magazine starting back up again.

Comic Seed is slated to go offline within the next 2 to 3 days. Comic Seed itself was profitable, but regrettably it ended up being taken down along with its parent company, Penguin Shobo.

The following notice also appeared on Comic Seed's website:

Notice of Suspension of Publication

We apologize for the abrupt news, but due to the liquidation of Penguin Shobo Publishing, Comic Seed will cease publication. Effective Thursday, November 3rd, all content will be erased from this site, and Comic Seed will no longer be available for viewing. We thank the support that you, the readers, have given us for over 3 years since our inception.

Went bankrupted in mid-2007:

Shinbunka reports that Touen Shobo (Toen Shobo) has closed its business on August 31st. According to the report, Touen Shobo notified their lenders regarding an adjustment of their debts on August 24th.

Toen Shobo has been making many changes to their books and magazines in recently years, and has sold many properties to keep their financial results stable. Later Toen Shobo proposed a "reconstruction plan" that involved getting rid of the division in charge of publishing adult contents, reducing employees and employment costs, disposing bad inventories, cutting down the debt by 90%, etc. Some magazines were also sold to other publishers. In early August, rumors began circulating on the web that the publisher is bankrupt.
